# Create a JavaScript Action
2019-09-11 06:21:19 +00:00
2019-09-11 06:49:27 +00:00
Use this template to bootstrap the creation of a JavaScript action.:rocket:
2019-09-11 07:12:35 +00:00
This template includes tests, linting, a validation workflow, publishing, and versioning guidance.
If you are new, there's also a simpler introduction. See the [Hello World JavaScript Action](https://github.com/actions/hello-world-javascript-action)

## Create an action from this template
Click the `Use this Template` and provide the new repo details for your action
## Code in Master
2019-09-11 06:50:55 +00:00
Install the dependencies
2019-09-11 06:21:19 +00:00
```bash
$ npm install
```
2019-09-11 06:48:04 +00:00
Run the tests :heavy_check_mark:
2019-09-11 06:21:19 +00:00
```bash
$ npm test
PASS ./index.test.js
✓ throws invalid number (3ms)
✓ wait 500 ms (504ms)
✓ test runs (95ms)
...
```

## Change action.yml
2019-09-11 06:21:19 +00:00
2019-09-11 13:14:34 +00:00
The action.yml contains defines the inputs and output for your action.
2019-09-11 06:21:19 +00:00
2019-09-11 13:14:34 +00:00
Update the action.yml with your name, description, inputs and outputs for your action.
2019-09-11 06:21:19 +00:00
See the [documentation](https://help.github.com/en/articles/metadata-syntax-for-github-actions)
## Change the Code
Most toolkit and CI/CD operations involve async operations so the action is run in an async function.
```javascript
const core = require('@actions/core');
...
async function run() {
try {
...
}
catch (error) {
core.setFailed(error.message);
}
}
run()
```
See the [toolkit documentation](https://github.com/actions/toolkit/blob/master/README.md#packages) for the various packages.

## Package for distribution
2019-09-11 06:42:43 +00:00
2019-10-23 02:09:30 +00:00
Actions are run from GitHub repos. Packaging the action will create a packaged action in the dist folder.
2019-09-11 06:42:43 +00:00
2019-10-23 02:13:09 +00:00
Run package
2019-09-11 06:42:43 +00:00
```bash
2019-10-23 01:51:21 +00:00
npm run package
2019-09-11 06:42:43 +00:00
```
2019-10-23 01:51:21 +00:00
Since the packaged index.js is run from the dist folder, check it in.
2019-09-11 06:42:43 +00:00
```bash
2019-10-23 01:51:21 +00:00
git add dist
```
## Create a release branch
Users shouldn't consume the action from master since that would be latest code and actions can break compatibility between major versions.
```bash
$ git checkout -b v1
$ git commit -a -m "v1 release"
2019-09-11 06:42:43 +00:00
```
```bash
$ git push origin releases/v1
```
2019-09-11 06:48:04 +00:00
Your action is now published! :rocket:
2019-09-11 06:42:43 +00:00
See the [versioning documentation](https://github.com/actions/toolkit/blob/master/docs/action-versioning.md)
2019-09-11 06:21:19 +00:00
2019-10-23 01:51:21 +00:00
## Usage
2019-09-11 06:42:43 +00:00
2019-10-23 01:51:21 +00:00
You can now consume the action by referencing the v1 branch
2019-09-11 06:21:19 +00:00
```yaml
2019-10-23 01:51:21 +00:00
uses: actions/javascript-action@v1
2019-09-11 06:21:19 +00:00
with:
milliseconds: 1000
```
2019-09-11 07:08:58 +00:00
See the [actions tab](https://github.com/actions/javascript-action/actions) for runs of this action! :rocket:
